Public transportation reduces pollution and helps promote cleaner air.

The average width of a highway lane is 11 feet.

There are 5,233 public-use airports that serve commercial carriers and emplane more than 700 million passengers each year.

There are almost 140,000 miles of railroad track that carries much of the nation's heavy freight and agricultural output.

Highways in rural areas are in somewhat better condition than those in urban areas.
