SAFETEA-LU Reauthorization Recommendations
Critical Commerce Corridors
Six Immediate Challenges
- $78 billion per year “congestion tax.” Since 1982, car and truck traffic has doubled while highway capacity increased 6.6 percent.
- Global Competitiveness. China, India, European Union are making major transportation investments to bolster their economic goals.
- Freight Tsunami. Freight bottlenecks cost the trucking industry $8 billion annually and truck traffic will double by 2035.
- Crumbling Infrastructure. Maintaining current congestion levels and physical conditions requires an additional $19 billion annually, according to U.S. DOT.
- HTF Solvency. Current Highway Trust Fund revenues cannot support SAFETEA-LU spending levels. Pending $16 billion cut in highway investment.
- SAFETY. More than 43,000 killed on U.S. highways annually and traffic crashes cost society $230 billion per year.
