Winston Churchill once observed: "If you're going through hell, keep going."

When put in context of the current economic climate facing America today, those words may be slightly exaggerated. But there is no doubt that U.S. businesses, including many in the transportation design and construction industry, are facing some of the toughest challenges in a generation.

Yet, now is not the time to panic. In a crisis, there is opportunity. Now is the time to take advantage of the opportunity you have to refine your business model and your business. And that's what ARTBA is aiming to help you do during its 2009 National Convention at the Charleston Place Hotel!

Essentially, this year's program has been developed by you-the ARTBA membership. In a response to an April survey sent via e-mail to the association's members, respondents overwhelmingly said they wanted general sessions that focused on: managing business operations in unprecedented economic times, examining industry merger and acquisition trends, and receiving a federal legislative and regulatory update.

Scott Humrickhouse, a long-time industry veteran and highly-rated speaker from FMI Corporation, will lead a comprehensive session to help industry firms navigate the economic "perfect storm." He will provide practical information and strategies that can help your firm "survive and thrive" in these difficult times.

I'm also pleased that Lt. General John W. Rosa (USAF-Ret.), president of my alma mater, The Citadel, will share his thoughts about "leadership under adversity" and the importance of business ethics.

ARTBA staff will update you on a myriad of federal transportation policy issues impacting your market, including a status on the highway/transit reauthorization legislation. Of course, the convention program also includes time for meetings of the ARTBA Divisions, Council of State Executives, Bridge Policy & Promotion Council, and more.

Charleston Place Hotel reservations can be made by calling 843-722-4900 or 800-831-3490. There are a limited number of rooms available so book yours early! Be sure to indicate your stay is in conjunction with the ARTBA National Convention to receive the $269 discounted room rate, which is guaranteed through September 3. Reservations made after that date will be on a space available basis.

We look forward to seeing you in Charleston!
