University of Virginia Transportation Educator Honored With National Award

Washington, D.C. [January 25, 2007]—Nicholas J. Garber, The Henry L. Kinnier professor of civil engineering at the University of Virginia (UVA), is the 2006 recipient of the American Road & Transportation Builders Association’s (ARTBA) S.S. Steinberg Award.  The award was announced January 22 during the annual meeting of the association’s Research and Education Division (RED), held in Washington, D.C.

The award, named after the founding president of the RED, recognizes an individual who has made remarkable contributions to transportation education.

Garber, who is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and also a chartered engineer in the United Kingdom, has been with UVA since 1980.  He is the author more than 100 publications and reports.  His research has focused on traffic operations and highway safety, intelligent transportation systems, speed management on high speed roads, work zone safety and large truck safety.

Previously, he was chair of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Committee on Traffic Safety in Maintenance and Construction Operations.  He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Committee on Highway Safety and Traffic Operations and serves on the editorial board of ASCE's “Journal of Transportation Engineering.”

Garber was president of RED in 2004-05 and currently is a member of ARTBA’s board of directors.  He plays an important role in helping develop the association’s policy positions, particularly in the research area.

During his distinguished career, Garber has been recognized with awards from TRB, the Institute of Transportation Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineering (Virginia chapter).
