Transportation Construction Industry
Washington, D.C. [March 26, 2007]—Transportation construction industry leaders will travel to Washington, D.C., May 8-9 to help generate congressional support for critical federal highway and airport construction programs. The industry fly-in is sponsored by the 28 national construction and labor unions that comprise the Transportation Construction Coalition (TCC). The TCC is co-chaired by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA).
The event gives a cross section of the highway industry—contractors, material suppliers, engineers, and manufacturers—the opportunity to stay current on relevant legislative and regulatory issues facing the industry and educate members of Congress on the importance of transportation construction. “The new Congress presents challenges and opportunities, and it is more important than ever to aggressively educate new Members and leadership on issues important to the transportation industry,” stated Steve Sandherr, Chief Executive Officer, AGC. A key issue this year is the dangerously low level of revenues in the Highway Trust Fund. Fly-in attendees will make the case for increasing Highway Trust Fund revenues in order to keep America moving. “We will work with Congress to ensure the highway and transit investment levels called for in the SAFETEA-LU law are fully implemented in the fiscal year 2008 transportation appropriations bill,” says ARTBA President Pete Ruane. The Fly-In’s May 8 congressional reception will be hosted by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM). “We are pleased to again support this transportation grassroots effort,” says Dennis Slater, AEM President.
