ARTBA Makes Multi-Lingual Roadway
Washington, D.C. [April 26, 2007]—Balancing the risk exposure for both workers and motorists in all phases of transportation planning and construction are the keys to boosting safety in roadway work zones, the American Road & Transportation Builders Association’s (ARTBA) top safety executive told U.S. and Mexican government officials and industry professionals gathered in McAllen, Texas, April 17-19, for the “2007 Border-to-Border Transportation Conference.” The event was organized by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), several states and local jurisdictions, and their Mexican counterparts that manage key transportation hubs along the U.S./Mexico border. ARTBA was the only national construction-related association to participate. “Many traffic engineers want more work done at night and minimal encroachment into travel lanes so there is less congestion and less motorist exposure to construction hazards and delays,” ARTBA Vice President of Safety & Education Brad Sant said. “However, night-time operations and crowded, small construction zones create significant hazards for workers, increasing their risks of being struck by impaired motorists or backed over by construction equipment. The goal is for all involved in roadway construction to understand the safety challenges faced by the various industry segments and to resolve or balance those many needs.” In his presentation, Sant shared the unique content in the “Roadway Safety” training program, which covers 15 key roadway work zone safety concerns in English, Spanish and Portuguese. The multi-lingual approach is of particular interest to public officials from the U.S. and Mexico as they work to improve cross-border communications in key trade corridors to enhance the transportation of goods, services and people. The training program was developed by ARTBA and key industry partners, including the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), Laborers Health and Safety Fund of North America, National Asphalt Pavement Association, International Union of Operating Engineers and Texas Transportation Institute (TTI). An updated and expanded “Roadway Safety” training program will be unveiled this fall at the “National Traffic Management and Work Zone Safety Conference,” scheduled October 9-12, 2007, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The conference is being sponsored by the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse and ARTBA’s Transportation Development Foundation in partnership with FHWA, AASHTO and TTI.
