Washington, D.C. [Oct. 04, 2007] Watch live as highway safety crews, Florida law enforcement officials and Florida Department of Transportation experts conduct a multiple-vehicle accident and roll-over recovery to demonstrate “quick” clearance techniques used every day along the state’s highways. It takes place Wednesday, October 10, at 3:30 p.m., adjacent to the Greater Fort Lauderdale-Broward County Convention Center.

The demonstration is just one of the highlights of six transportation, traffic management and safety, infrastructure, and parking events taking place October 9-12 at the convention center, and organized by the Washington, D.C.-based American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA).

Federal Highway Administrator Rick Capka–the senior Bush Administration highway official—will speak (October 11: 11:00 a.m., convention center floor) about road safety and traffic congestion issues, and the role of technology in building transportation projects.

Former Michigan Governor and current National Association of Manufacturers President & CEO John Engler(October 9: 2:15-3:15 p.m., Hyatt Regency Pier 66, Panorama B) will highlight the transportation challenges facing the business community, and solutions necessary to ensure the nation’s industrial and manufacturing sectors remain competitive in a global marketplace.

Lee Corso , ESPN “College Game Day” football analyst (October 9: 1:00-2:00 p.m., Hyatt Regency Pier 66, Crystal Ballroom 1&2) and National Football League Hall of Fame Coach Don Shula (October 10: 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., convention center floor) will also be on hand.

Other major events taking place at the convention center:

  • Intertraffic North America 2007 (www.northamerica.intertraffic.com) – the world’s largest and most influential trade show brand for infrastructure, traffic management and safety, and parking. This event, co-hosted by Amsterdam RAI, promises more 1,500 attendees and 110 industry-leading exhibitors.
  • National Traffic Management & Work Zone Safety Conference (www.workzonesafety.org) – the premier event for traffic management and safety professionals, co-sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse.
  • “Park Across America” (www.parkingtoday.com) – a special, one-day regional seminar for parking managers produced by the publishers of “Parking Today.”
  • 2007 ARTBA National Convention
    (www.artbanationalconvention.org) – the annual education and policy development forum for transportation infrastructure design, construction and management professionals.
  • International Road Federation Latin America Regional Meeting (www.irfnews.org) – the only annual summit and educational forum on roadway safety issues for top-level transportation professionals from Latin America.
  • Florida Transportation Commission (www.ftc.state.fl.us) – created in 1987 by the state legislature to serve as a citizen’s oversight board for the Florida Department of Transportation, the commission will hold its monthly meeting to discuss important transportation-related issues affecting the state.

The Roll-over recovery vehicle demonstration will occur live, on-site in the parking lot between the inlet and the Greater Fort Lauderdale-Broward County Convention Center, Wednesday, October 10 at 3:30 p.m. Members of the media are encouraged to arrive by 3:00 p.m. for set-up and positioning.

Camera and sound “throw” from stage to roll-over demo impact area is approximately 30-yards, although media will have the opportunity to film up-close before and after shots as well as to conduct interviews with Florida Law Enforcement, Florida Department of Transportation Smart SunGuide Transportation Management Center officials and industry safety experts.

The Greater Fort Lauderdale-Broward County Convention Center is located at 1950 Eisenhower Blvd. The demonstration will be held in the parking area between the main center entrance and the inlet.
