Statement of ARTBA President & CEO Pete
Washington, D.C. [Dec. 20, 2007]—"Last fall, House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee Chairman Jim Oberstar (D-Minn.) introduced a strategic, targeted capital investment initiative that had accountability, prohibited earmarks and was directed at a defined national objective—improving structurally deficient bridges on the National Highway System. Senate Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Patty Murray (D-Wash.) also championed the need for increased bridge investment." "These federal legislators deserve tremendous credit for their leadership in pushing the issue forward and helping secure an additional $1 billion for bridge improvements in the FY 2008 omnibus appropriations bill. We commend Congress as well for continuing to recognize the importance and value of federal transportation investment." ### Established in 1902, ARTBA represents the U.S. transportation design and construction industry before Congress, the Executive Branch, federal agencies, news media and general public.
