Washington, D.C. [May 21, 2008]The Highway Trust Fund is facing a first-ever deficit, falling $3.7 billion short of being able to meet SAFETEA-LU's highway investment guarantees. Unless Congress acts, every state will suffer a 34 percent cut in its highway and bridge funding, beginning October 1, 2008. That is the powerful message of a new print ad from the Transportation Construction Coalition (TCC) running in Capitol Hill publications this week.

The ad directs members of Congress and their staffs to an Internet website, www.transportationconstructioncoalition.org, to learn more about each state's potential highway funding cut and job loss.

The TCC is running the ad in conjunction with its May 20-21 Washington Fly-In. More than 400 transportation design and construction officials will visit Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress to educate them about the shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund, voice opposition to a proposed federal gas tax suspension over the summer travel season, express the need to boost highway, transit and airport investment in the FY 2009 appropriations bill, and highlight key investment and policy issues relating to the 2009 highway/transit bill.

Established in 1996 and co-chaired by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) and the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), the TCC includes 28 national associations and unions with a direct market interest in the federal transportation programs.
