(Washington, D.C.)—The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) has made a generous $10,000 contribution in support of the American Road & Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation’s (ARTBA-TDF) “Highway Worker Memorial Scholarship” fund, the association announced June 17.

The scholarship provides post-high school financial assistance to the children of highway workers killed or permanently disabled on the job.  More than 100 workers die every year in roadway construction zone accidents in the United States.  The program was established in 1999 with a gift to the ARTBA-TDF from two Roanoke, Va., highway contractors and their companies—Stan Lanford of Lanford Brothers, and Jack Lanford, of Adams Construction Company.  Both men are past ARTBA chairmen.

Scholarship recipients in 2008 included students from Ga., Iowa, Md., Mass., Mo., Mont., N.Y., and Pa.  The IUOE gift will aid the Foundation’s efforts in providing scholarships for the 2009 academic year.  Since 1999, more than 60 students have been awarded scholarships.

The ARTBA-TDF “Highway Worker Memorial Scholarship” fund also receives support from transportation design and construction firms, the American Association of State Highway & Transportation Officials and labor unions.  Individuals or organizations interested in supporting the program can do so by contacting ARTBA’s Rhonda Britton at 202-289-4434, or writing a check to: ARTBA-TDF, 1219 28th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20007.

The ARTBA-TDF was established in 1985 as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt entity to promote research, education and public awareness.  It supports an array of initiatives, including educational scholarships, awards, roadway work zone safety and training programs, special economic reports and a national exhibition on transportation.
