Training Programs

ARTBA’s award-winning training programs approach roadway construction safety from “both sides of the barricades,” meaning we aim to ensure motorists, workers and pedestrians can safely navigate work zones when construction is underway.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is preparing federal regulations to address “back over” hazards in road and bridge construction work zones.   A new ARTBA course will help ensure your company is prepared the meet the new OSHA requirements.

Whistle blow

Problem: More than two roadway construction or maintenance workers are killed on the job every week. Another 40 workers are injured every day.

Problem: Roadway accidents also cost transportation-related contractors a lot of money: more than a HALF BILLION DOLLARS annually, according to data from the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Each death in the construction industry costs $4 million in direct and indirect expenses; each injury resulting in lost work days costs $42,000.

Solution: Through its Transportation Development Foundation (TDF), ARTBA has created a breakthrough, first-of-its-kind “Safe Backing & Spotting” certificate training program.  This training is specifically designed for—and aimed to reach—workers, foremen and supervisors on road and bridge projects.  It will help you protect your most important asset—your people—and your businesses’ bottom line.  It is also the latest in a broad-series of ARTBA-TDF training developed over the past 30 years to tackle emerging safety risks unique to transportation design and construction professionals.

Certificates: The Backing/Spotting course is designed to help meet the rigorous ANSI/ASTM E2659 standard for certificate programs. It is being taught by ARTBA’s cadre of industry-expert master instructors, and addresses the most significant hazards in transportation construction.

ARTBA provides high-quality training at your place of business at very competitive rates.  Let us help take your training programs to a new level of understanding!

Backing & Spotting
The program is focused on training workers to avoid dangerous traffic areas on roadway construction sites, to recognize hazards surrounding equipment, and to provide clear communication between drivers/operators and spotters through the use of standardized signals and communication. This course is a must for spotters, construction drivers/operators, supervisors and other workers who labor in close proximity to moving trucks and equipment. Experienced spotters can attend this course as a refresher. All attendees will receive a certificate of course completion from ARTBA-TDF. Employers also receive documentation for their insurance carriers, potentially reducing costs or holding premiums in check.

OSHA 10 and 30-Hour Classes
ARTBA broke ground more than 10 years ago with its OSHA 10-Hour Training Exclusively for the Roadway construction Industry.  Now revised and updated, this is a revolutionary program for owners, safety managers, supervisors, and workers is focused directly on the hazards and situations that roadway construction workers face every day. From work zones to night work, this training sets the standard for the entire industry!
