What happened: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Feb. 22 issued guidance for the newly-established Airport Terminal Program (ATP), a discretionary grant program created in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). The IIJA allocates $1 billion per year to ATP for the next five years.

Why it’s important: Federal resources are traditionally used only for runway and taxiway projects through the annual investments made via the Airport Improvement Program. However, the ATP program is designed to address for airport terminal enhancements that, ‘will improve airfield safety through terminal relocation, replace aging facilities, increase capacity, encourage competition, improve energy efficiency (including LEED accreditation standards) and increase or improve access to passengers with disabilities and historically disadvantaged populations.’

What’s next: Airports have until March 28 to submit applications. Selected projects will be announced in July. Read the FAA ‘Notice of Funding Opportunity.’
