(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Live streamed from an active jobsite in Mobile, Ala., roadway construction workers will pause to focus on work zone safety during the April 15 National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) annual Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-by Incidents training event. This national event, which begins at 1:30 p.m., Central time, teaches crews how to make their roadway work zones injury-free zones, the effective use of internal traffic control plans, and how to define the struck-by challenge.

Sponsored by the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse, the event is being organized by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) and Alabama Road Builders Association (ARBA). Highway construction crews from around the country are invited and are expected to participate.

“We hold this event every year to spotlight the ongoing dangers road workers face every day as they build and fix roads, bridges, and highways across America,” said Bradley Sant, ARTBA’s senior vice president of safety and education.

Those dangers were magnified tragically in Maryland last year when a speeding car crashed through an opening in a concrete barrier on I-695 near Baltimore, hitting and killing six highway construction workers.

Presenters include the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), contractor H.O. Weaver & Sons, Inc., and ARTBA. Access the livestreamed event .
