What happened: ARTBA submitted Dec. 17 comments for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (U.S. DOT) draft strategic plan. The agency sought comment on its goals in safety, economic strength and global competitiveness, equity, climate and sustainability, and transformation and organizational excellence.

Why it matters: The draft strategic plan will shape U.S. DOT policy through fiscal year 2026, including how the agency implements the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) reauthorization law. ARTBA’s comments focused on safety, climate and sustainability, and transformation and organizational excellence areas. ARTBA urged U.S. DOT to include highway worker safety, digital construction, and resiliency in its future goals. ARTBA’s suggestions were taken from the work done by the association’s Safety Forum and Innovation and Technology Forum. ARTBA thanks its members who contributed to this work.

What’s next: U.S. DOT will release its final strategic plan in 2022. ARTBA will continue to work with the agency as it implements the IIJA.
