What happened: ARTBA’s report shows that women’s share of employment in the transportation construction industry has been flat over the last 20 years.  Employment trends are covered in three major sectors: highway and bridge contractors, supplier manufacturing, and planning and design (P&D) firms.

Why it matters: The document provides a baseline for firms to benchmark their own status and progress, by state and market sector. While the share of women workers is 48 percent of total employment nationally, it’s lower for highway and bridge contractors (13 percent of employees), supplier manufacturing firms (27 percent), and P&D firms (30 percent). Despite this national trend, some states and regions have nonetheless made significant gains in the share of women workers – notably Washington. D.C. (36.5 percent); Rhode Island (31.5 percent); and Massachusetts (29 percent).

Dig deeper: This report, a joint effort by ARTBA’s Women Leaders and Workforce Development Councils, features member quotes and video interviews to add a real-world perspective and highlight career pathways for women in construction.
