The Gunnison River Bridge near Delta, Colo., was built in 1938 and carried traffic on Highway 92 until numerous structural deficiencies led to plans for the structure’s replacement. To reduce inconvenience to motorists during the anticipated yearlong project, the contractor rented an Acrow bridge to serve as a detour for local traffic and the many visitors to the heavily-touristed region. Acrow engineered and supplied a 250-foot-long clear span structure with a roadway width of 30 feet. It was designed to AASHTO HL-93 load specifications to accommodate truck traffic and had an anti-skid aggregate epoxy road surface. Despite the particularly long length of the span, the bridge was installed without problem utilizing a full cantilever launch and was in use for the duration of the project.
