What happened: A Feb. 28 report by the Governor’s Highway Safety Association (GHSA) shows pedestrian roadway deaths on the rise again during the first six months of 2022 – up five percent over the same time 2021 which marked a 40-year high. The report sites one death every 75 minutes.

What they’re saying: In a statement, GHSA Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Adkins said, ‘The only way to reverse this awful trend is to do more of everything that worksÉ,’ citing the need for better infrastructure to ‘keep people walking safe’ as well as enforcement of traffic safety laws and community engagement.

One effective tool transportation agencies can use is the Highway Safety Improvement Program for financing projects that incorporate the Screen-Guard Pedestrian Crossing Deterrent. Mounted onto existing concrete barriers, Screen-Guard discourages people from crossing in non-designated areas. Crash tests show minimal damage to the screen, zero passenger compartment intrusion and no scattered debris in opposing traffic lanes – making it a safe option for drivers as well.
