U.S. DOT Announces INFRA Grants Totaling $1.5 Billion for 26 Transportation Projects

What happened: Twenty-two states and Puerto Rico will receive grants for multimodal, freight and highway project improvements via the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) program. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) provides $8 billion to U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) for the INFRA program over five years.

INFRA awards this round include projects for highway reconstruction and expansion, bridge rehabilitation, truck parking, and port improvements.

Why it matters: INFRA awards emphasize projects of regional significance that improve safety, boost the movement of freight, and reduce congestion. Discretionary grant awards account for 13 percent of total IIJA highway investment and allow the Biden administration to play a larger role in how funds are disbursed.
