Website for Tariff Refunds Accepting Applications

What’s happening: The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) April 20 launched an online portal for importers to request refunds of duties assessed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The announcement follows a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision finding the IEEPA-based tariffs unlawful, and a subsequent federal court order directing the government to refund duties collected under that authority.

Why it matters: An estimated $127–$166 billion in tariff revenue was collected under the now-invalidated IEEPA tariffs. Importers that paid these duties are entitled to refunds, but the process has lacked clarity. CBP’s new portal is intended to manage what is expected to be a significant volume of claims and provide a more structured path for recovery.

What’s next: CBP will accept claims in phases, beginning with unliquidated entries and entries within 80 days of liquidation. Importers should monitor eligibility and submit requests through the portal during the applicable phase, following all agency guidance.
