What happened: The number of fatal occupational injuries in the highway, street, and bridge (HSB) construction sector fell by 4.5 percent, from 88 in 2023 to 84 in 2024 (the most recent years data is available), according to ARTBA’s analysis of data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Why it matters: This follows several years of slow but overall steady decline, showing efforts to enhance jobsite safety and awareness are having a positive impact. The downward trend reinforces the value of ARTBA’s safety-focused partnerships with the Federal Highway Administration, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

What’s next: As the industry gears up for spring construction season, ARTBA members can continue doing their part by enhancing internal safety programs.
