Making Mobile More Mobile

Challenge: McGregor Avenue in Mobile, Ala. harkens back to the sleepy days of the city’s past. In the decades since, the population has grown, and with it the number of cars. It was never meant to handle today’s traffic volumes. For 15 years city officials and local business leaders have called for updates.

Solution: With help from the federal infrastructure investment law, the city of Mobile is finally able to modernize this busy street. The South McGregor Avenue Project is being done in phases. In phase 1, underway now, crews are widening the roadway, adding sidewalks and bike lanes, replacing an old bridge, and adding a roundabout. The project will include a complete roadway and underground infrastructure rebuild (water, sewer, storm drain and other utilities). For those who depend on this road, a safer and more reliable trip is just ahead.

What they’re saying:These are federal dollars and local dollars being reinvested back into the community to modernize the routes, make them safer, make them more pedestrian friendly.” – Mobile City Engineer Nick Amberger (WKRG News 5, 05/01/2023)
