More Than Just an Interchange

Challenge: Since the 1960’s, Interstates 16 and 75 in Macon, Ga. have been key to the state’s economic growth. The area where they merge – sometimes known as “the I-16 and I-75 split” – has an outdated configuration. It was never meant to handle today’s traffic. Thousands of big rigs use this interchange to carry goods from Georgia’s ports to cities throughout the country. Throw in thousands of daily commuters from Macon’s suburbs and you have one very congested interchange and two very congested highways.

Solution: With help from federal infrastructure investment the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is in the middle of a massive, seven-phase effort to bring this network up to modern day standards. The I-16 / I-75 Interchange Project is much more than an interchange replacement. GDOT and its contractors are delivering added interstate lanes, new on- and off-ramps, and new collector/distributor road systems parallel to both I-16 and I-75. Updates are also being made to bridges and surface streets and dedicated turn lanes are being added. Once complete, the streamlined network of side roads, highways lanes, and flyover bridges will allow trucks and commuters to seamlessly merge. The new interchange will serve the area’s economic needs and those of the nation for generations to come.

What they’re saying: “We have been grateful for the opportunity to partner with GDOT and play a major role in this corridor; the intersection is critical for commerce and connecting the citizens of this great State. We are once again proud of playing a role in ‘Getting Georgia Home.’” – Dan Garcia, C.W. Mathews
