Major Upgrades Make for Safer Travel in Southeast Idaho

Challenge:
I-15 is the only major north-south passage through the rugged landscape of eastern Idaho. Constructed in the 1960s, what was once a lonely highway is now a busy corridor used by truckers, commuters and recreationalists. Rapid growth and increased trucking commerce require upgrades to keep travelers safe – particularly at Exit 80 which provides access to the Fort Hall community.

Solution: With help from federal infrastructure investment, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is upgrading the highway in segments and has built a modern, safer connection at Exit 80, a.k.a. the Fort Hall Interchange. The upgrades include two lanes in either direction with a center lane to protect from oncoming traffic. ITD also built longer and wider interchange ramps; a six-foot shoulder for safer pedestrian and bicycle crossing; and improved lighting, landscaping, irrigation, and cattle guards. They also built a 10-foot pedestrian and bicycle crossing over the bridge separated from traffic by concrete barrier.

What they’re saying: “The interstate is in need of improvement as traffic volumes continue to increase in southeast Idaho.  ITD has determined that additional lanes are needed to enhance safety and to meet continued growth and travel demands.” – District 5 Engineering Manager, Eric Staats.
