Challenge: Champaign, Ill. has seen exponential growth in the last 60 years. In addition to the University of Illinois main campus, the area is now home to several major manufacturing, logistics and health care companies. Carrying much of this activity are Interstates 57 and 74, and the interchange where these two highways converge is struggling to keep up with demand. Built in the 1960s, its deficient geometric features were never meant to handle today’s traffic volumes and vehicle speeds. The result: abrupt slowdowns and dangerous merging and weaving.
Solution: With help from federal infrastructure investment, the Illinois Department of Transportation is modernizing this critical juncture to improve traffic flow and safety. The outdated cloverleaf design is being replaced with two flyover ramps. A third, auxiliary lane is also being added to both directions of I-74. Green space with native grasses will cut down on planting and mowing and added LED lighting will improve visibility.
What they’re saying: “The rebuilding of Interstate 57/74 is a long-time goal of our region…Not only will this project improve transportation, but this is a great opportunity to grow our economy by building our workforce and keeping people in our state and community working.” – Illinois State Representative Carol Ammons (World Construction Network, 08/24/2021)
