Clearing a Path to Mobility
Challenge: Population growth on the northeast side of Indianapolis means more people getting on the highway. According to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), 120,000 drivers pass through the area of I-465 and I-69 every day. An Indianapolis Star report placed that number at 87,000 just four years ago. Clogged roads lead to frustrated drivers and sometimes accidents. Built decades ago – the highway system was not designed to handle this many vehicles.
Solution: With help from the federal infrastructure investment law, the state is getting ahead of this problem by undergoing a massive project to improve safety and traffic flow. The Clear Path I-465 & I-69 Project will transform one of the state’s busiest interchanges with high-speed, high-capacity ramps that reduce traffic weaving and merging. The project includes adding travel lanes, new ramps, 14 new bridges, two rehabilitated bridges, maintenance work and interchange modifications. For people who depend on these highways daily to get to work, school and appointments – a safer and more reliable trip is just ahead.
What they’re saying: “[Clear Path 465] really accommodates the growth we’re seeing here in Indiana and making sure our roads are up to date, they’re safe and they’re efficient as well. It’s going to make for a safer merging system and a safer way for residents to get around, especially during those peak hours of rush hour.” – INDOT Public Relations Director Kyleigh Cramer (FOX 59 News, 09/12/2023)
