Road Revival in Iowa

Challenge: Like many American main streets, the downtown business district in Cedar Falls, Iowa has seen a revival. In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s the main street was all but dead. Thanks to a concerted effort, the area now offers breweries, restaurants, and boutiques. Unfortunately, the road that runs through the business district has not seen the same revival. Outdated lanes and traffic patterns mean clogged roads that are not always safe for shoppers and diners.

Solution: With help from the federal infrastructure investment law, the city is moving forward with a plan to revitalize this thoroughfare. The Main Street Reconstruction Project will take the current four lane street to three, with a dedicated turn lane in the middle and new sidewalks on both sides. Three new roundabouts will keep cars moving and a gateway at the east end will serve as a visual welcome to visitors. The project will also replace the 100-year-old sewer, water, and storm drainage infrastructure below. The changes will enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and attract even more people and money to the downtown area.

What they’re saying: “Cedar Falls is excited for the Main Street Reconstruction Project! The project will include a variety of enhancements to benefit our community including improved pavement conditions and traffic flow, increased safety, bicycle and pedestrian mobility, and economic growth and revitalization support.” – Chase Schrage, Director of Public Works, City of Cedar Falls
