Bridging the Aging Infrastructure Gap

Challenge: Large stretches of the U.S. interstate system were built at one time, so when it comes time to replacing or updating a state’s infrastructure, it can be a daunting task. Some of the most important crossings in Austin, Minn. are nearing the end of their design life. Built in the 1950s and located along the important east-west I-90 corridor – they connect this region of southeastern Minnesota to the rest of the country. For five years transportation officials have been planning and engaging citizens on ways to address the issue.

Solution: With help from the federal infrastructure investment law, the state is moving forward with a plan to replace six of eight bridges along I-90 over the next three years. The I-90 Bridge Reconstruction Project is rebuilding five overhead structures, two mainline bridges, and one pedestrian bridge, as well as rehabilitating two mainline bridges. The project includes ramp connection and traffic signal improvements, construction of a network of ADA accessible multiuse sidewalks and trails, and replacement of stormwater infrastructure.

What they’re saying: “When we invest in Minnesota’s roads and bridges, we invest in Minnesota’s economy, safety, and livability,” said Governor Walz. “I am grateful for this federal partnership and their decision to award funding to a critical piece of infrastructure in southern Minnesota.” (Press Release, 09/16/2023)
