A New Burgard Bridge Is Indispensable

Challenge: The Burgard Bridge in North Portland, Ore., is indispensable to the city, carrying more than 8,600 vehicles per day – including upwards of 3,100 trucks. It is a critical connection for area commuters and a key corridor for freight with its proximity to major container shipping companies and 0heavy industrial businesses along the Willamette River. But at the ripe old age of 92, it is clearly seen better days. The bridge was rated in poor condition and has substructural damage after being clobbered by a train derailment in 2020. The viaduct goes over a Union Pacific Railroad line and is vulnerable to earthquakes.

Solution: With help from the bipartisan federal infrastructure investment law, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT)’s is moving forward with a plan to replace this important structure. The new bridge, when completed, remove geometric deficiencies, add a third railroad track to better facilitates freight movement (including over-dimensional loads), provide enhanced bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and meet seismic standards to maintain connectivity along an identified emergency route in the event of an earthquake.

What they’re saying: “This investment will provide access for freight to some crucial industrial areas and provide a safer route for biking and walking on a major corridor in the St. Johns neighborhood. With a seismic upgrade, this bridge will benefit Portlanders and our entire region for generations to come.” – Interim PBOT Director Tara Wasiak (Bike Portland, 04/23/2023)
