New Life for a ‘Lifeline” in South Central PA

Challenge: The I-83 John Harris Memorial (South) Bridge in Pennsylvania was built in 1960 and widened in 1982. It connects downtown Harrisburg to its neighboring communities to the west in Cumberland County. The bridge carries more than 125,000 vehicles over the Susquehanna River every day. Unfortunately, it is nearing the end of its serviceable lifespan – meaning this essential river crossing requires more regular, frequent, and costly repairs.

Solution: With help from federal infrastructure investment, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is moving forward with a plan to fully replace the 65-year-old bridge with a stronger, modern span. The I-83 South Bridge Replacement Project also includes several major improvements to the surrounding roads, bridges and interchanges that feed into South Bridge. For drivers in and around the state capital, a safer, faster and more reliable commute is on the way.

What they’re saying: “…the expansion of the South Bridge will allow Harrisburg to reach new heights…It is a lifeline that supports our economy, and that of our neighbors on both sides of the Susquehanna River.” – Mayor Wanda Williams (Community News / Harrisburg.gov, 07/17/2024)
