Fixing the Gap

Challenge: I-64 in Virginia is a vital connector between the state capital, Richmond, and the Newport News / Hampton Roads region. It carries freight to and from the ports and people to and from the beaches. It also serves as a vital link to America’s largest naval base and is an emergency evacuation route during hurricanes. As important as the road is, it’s the 29-mile stretch in the middle of New Kent County that has become famous (or infamous) for its congestion. When the road goes from three lanes to two, east and west traffic slows to a crawl and break lights can be seen for miles. It is known as the “I-64 gap.”

Solution: With help from the federal infrastructure investment law, the Virginia Department of Transportation is fixing the gap. The I-64 Widening Project, which is being built in three segments, will add a third lane in each direction and 10-foot-wide paved shoulders on both sides of the interstate in both directions. For all those who depend on this corridor – get ready to spend less time hitting the breaks and more time at your destination.

What they’re saying: “Through continued investments in our local and regional communities, the I-64 Widening Project will help unlock the corridor to unify the Richmond and Hampton Roads regions and enhance job opportunities and economic prosperity. We’ve only just broken ground on the project and we’re already seeing companies make significant investments along the corridor.” – Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) (11/14/2023, Channel 10 WAVY.com)
