Thinking Outside the Box
Challenge: If you commute in the growing city of Lynnwood, Wash. near Seattle, you have likely been boxed in by traffic. About 35,000 vehicles a day drive through the city’s business district. When local traffic runs up against Interstate 5 highway traffic, it creates a choke point. The problem is not getting better anytime soon. Lynnwood’s population is expected to double by 2035. Multiple studies have looked at ways to untangle the mess.
The Solution: With help from the federal infrastructure investment law, Lynnwood is thinking outside the box. The Poplar Way Bridge Project will build a new, six-lane, multi-modal bridge over I-5 and connect it with 33rd Avenue on the other side. This will separate local traffic from highway traffic. Sidewalks and bike lanes will give people new options to get around. The improvements will eliminate congestion, reduce air pollution, and give residents more of their time back.
