What happenedARTBA filed comments July 2 pursuant to the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) request for information on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in transportation. The comments summarize two key concerns: the need for baseline standards as well as data privacy and cybersecurity.

Why it matters: ARTBA members are at the forefront of utilizing AI to improve traffic management, enhance safety, and streamline project delivery. For this technology to reach its full potential, the agency must address standards and security issues to ensure consistency and reliability.

What’s next: U.S. DOT has not indicated how it will use the comments, but with the Biden Administration’s strong interest in AI policy, future regulations are possible. ARTBA is also hosting a series of webinars on AI topics. Members may contact Prianka Sharma or Allison Klein for more information on regulations and events.
