What happened: The City of Elkhorn, Wis., saved 4,000 cubic yards of material (about the volume of an Olympic-size swimming pool) and more than 350 dump truck trips during reconstruction of one road last year. Wright Street was experiencing “alligator cracking,” indicating poor subgrade support. Instead of conventional excavate and replace, the design team proposed using geosynthetic materials, specifically Tensar InterAx® geogrid and Tensar+™ design software. The decision saved the city money and the contractor time off the construction schedule.
