What happened: The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (U.S. DOT) recent announcement of $2.2 billion in grants served as the backdrop for an August road trip of project sites by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. The Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program provided investment for 166 projects in all 50 states.

ARTBA’s examination of the grants shows that they were split nearly equal between urban and rural areas. A breakdown by mode is below:

What’s next: Additional grant award announcements are expected in September. ARTBA will continue to track awards from the IIJA and highlight how states are using these historic investments to improve roads, bridges and public transportation systems.
