What happened: The U.S. Senate July 28 voted 93-1 to pass the Water Resources Development Act of 2022 (WRDA), biennial legislation to improve ports, navigation and inland waterways. The bill that authorizes 21 new Army Corps of Engineers water transportation construction projects and 36 feasibility studies for potential future projects. ARTBA urged support for the bill in a May 4 letter to the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

Why it matters: Projects authorized by the bill would help ease supply chain challenges, support existing transportation networks and boost water infrastructure resilience.

What’s next: The bill now must be negotiated with the House, which passed its version of WRDA earlier this year.
