The Express Lane to Economic Opportunity

Challenge:
Eastern Kentucky, with its gorgeous green mountains and sweeping natural landscape, is one of the most beautiful places in the country. But that same rugged terrain has also made it one of the most difficult to access. The area faced economic hardship following the decline of the coal industry. While other parts of the state have attracted new industries and well-paying jobs, the lack of modern infrastructure and efficient roadways in the east has left some communities feeling largely cut off from opportunity.

Solution: With support from federal infrastructure investment, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is working to close the region’s economic gap by completing the final two stages of the long-awaited Mountain Parkway Expansion. Built in six segments, the expansion widens the roadway from two lanes to four, increasing traffic capacity. It modernizes the route by straightening dangerous curves and adding medians to separate opposing lanes. Once complete, the Mountain Parkway will span over 90 miles. The high-speed corridor for commerce and mobility provides a continuous four-lane route across the state. The project will improve access to jobs and healthcare for residents, while giving tourists easier access to the natural beauty of Eastern Kentucky.

What they’re saying: “Our people of Eastern Kentucky deserve a modern four-lane highway … But not for people to get out, for people to come along this highway and help us rebuild hope and opportunity.  – Rocky Adkins, former state representative and now senior advisor to Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (The Paintsville Herald, 08/16/2023)
