On May 17, ARTBA led a coalition of 22 trade associations in filing comments on the White House Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) request for information on methods and practices for enhancing public participation in agency rule and policy making. Within the comments the associations stressed that it is essential that all individuals have a fair and equal opportunity to petition their government and have their views and interests represented within the federal policy and rulemaking process.

The coalition emphasized the following key points:

1. Trade associations should be recognized as invaluable resources for public engagement, not just low-hanging fruit.

2. Enhanced government transparency can lead to increased public participation.

3. The public engagement process should encourage, not dissuade, participation.

4. Metrics pertaining to public engagement should track more than just basic information.
