On Nov. 1, FHWA issued a final rule to improve work zone safety and mobility. The regulation includes updates to safety standards, data-driven assessments, and criteria for positive protection devices. ARTBA’s comments last year called for clarity, stronger protections, and integration of worker safety in training. While the rule adopts ARTBA’s recommendation for mandatory positive protection in certain high-speed work zones, it falls short by making crashworthiness criteria voluntary.

A redline version of the final regulatory text is available here.
